Koku Coffee Table Oval, Low

The tables are expressive in their restraint, complex in their simplicity. The inspiration comes from the legendary Japanese-American designer and woodworker George Nakashima.

About

Koku is an oval coffee table in solid oak and slender steel tubing, designed by Norm Architects. Lower in profile and relaxed in expression, it explores how fundamentally different materials, lines and geometric forms can be brought into balance. A thin steel tube supports the tabletop at one end, while a thick oak slab provides support at the other – a quiet reflection on balance expressed through two contrasting materials. Koku is a sculptural piece with strong character. Expressive in its restraint and complex in its simplicity, it draws inspiration from the work of Japanese-American designer and woodworker George Nakashima. He worked exclusively in solid wood, seeing both the living tree and wood as a material as our most important link to nature.

The designers / Norm Architects

Norm Architects are a Copenhagen-based design studio founded in 2008 by Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen and Kasper Rønn. Working across architecture, interiors, furniture and product design, the studio has become a defining voice in contemporary Scandinavian design.

The name Norm reflects their ambition to create design that supports the way we live – shaped by human behavior, tradition and context. Their philosophy is rooted in simplicity, natural materials and sensory awareness. Rather than minimalism as reduction alone, Norm Architects pursue atmosphere and balance. Their work is often described as “soft minimalism” – calm, tactile and deeply considered.
