FUNCTION / FRICTION / FINESSE / FOGIA

/ Think and act simultaneously. We believe that the best way to solve problems is to work nonlinearly – to think and act at the same time. This creates dynamism, engagement, and a sense of joy in the work. Crucial insights arise just as often in the workshop as at the drawing board. A large part of what we do is carried out by hand. Our craftspeople prove every day that knowledge and creativity do not reside only in the mind, but also in the hands. Craftsmanship is a major asset for us when it comes to bringing design ideas to life. Having our own factory is essential for ensuring that the idea remains intact throughout the journey from early sketch to finished product. It gives our product developers and craftspeople the freedom to experiment and explore new ways of solving problems– to work beyond the comfort of established routines.
/ Friction creates bonds. We avoid the notion of “timelessness.” No idea is born outside of time. A well-made piece of furniture carries many hours of work within it, and if we also consider the time it took for the materials themselves to come into being, it becomes clear how much time a piece of furniture can hold. What we seek instead are expressive, carefully crafted pieces that remain relevant and that people become more attached to over time – furniture that deepens in meaning and improves with age. We believe there is a common denominator to such pieces: they contribute what we call friction. Friction is the beauty mark, the deviation, the contradiction, the aura, the surprise, the poetry–the element that gives a piece of furniture its unique character. Friction offers resistance – not everyone will like the piece, but those who do, truly will. Friction creates bonds that grow stronger over time.
/ Function without friction is boring. To live in a completely user-friendly world, where everything works smoothly and exactly as expected, would be unbearably dull. It would be a world entirely without surprise or wonder. We believe that an important role of contemporary design is to combine function and friction – to challenge conventions and habitual ideas about how things should be. When we speak of friction, we do not mean form alone. It can just as well reside in the construction, in how a material is interpreted, or in a barely visible yet deeply meaningful detail.
/ It’s all about finesse. Function alone is no fun. Friction alone makes no sense – a self-serving provocation. That is not what we’re about. At Fogia, every piece of furniture contains both. Balancing function and friction requires finesse. You can tell when something is made with finesse. It’s not just something you see – you can feel it too: when you run your fingertips along a seam in a leather-upholstered armchair, or when you shift your position in it. It just feels right.
/ Let the material speak. We work with both traditional materials—such as solid oak, ash, beech, leather, and textiles in wool and linen—and entirely new ones. What the materials we choose have in common is that they can stand on their own, just as they are, and that they add value to the product. This is important to us. Because it is the materials–the way they are treated and how they are combined–that give rise to a product’s tactile expression: how it feels when you experience it with your body.
/ There is no conflict between tradition and renewal. We are part of a long tradition of furniture making. This equips us not only with the skills to solve problems in well-tried ways, developed over centuries. Precisely by being part of this tradition, we are also able to challenge it. We see no conflict between tradition and innovation. On the contrary. Tradition anchors new knowledge, while innovation keeps tradition alive by challenging it with ideas and tools that, over time, become part of it. Sometimes, the traditional is the most progressive. Furniture made by a genuine furniture maker are created to be passed down through generations. It is a quiet protest against fast furniture and an alternative to throwaway culture.
/ Have fun. This is not something we can prove, yet we are convinced it is true: joy in the work shows in the product. It shows in the precision of the craftsmanship and in how the materials appear. It shows in how it feels. In the end, it is quite simple: if you do something you truly want to do, you do it better, and if you do it together with people who are just as passionate, you do it even better.
